Set in the heart of the iconic Kew junction precinct this complex multi-use project had to balance a tight site, a heritage protected front façade and rigorous planning requirements, all the while ensuring a high quality architectural outcome. The program includes retail and commercial spaces integrated into the existing brick shopfront as well as 15 apartments over 6 levels. In respecting the heritage façade and the streetscape’s low level character, the additional storeys are set well back from the street face and present as a simple collision of two contrasting planes. Replicating the fenestration pattern and texture from the existing building subtly links the new and the old while a revitalisation of the frontage reconnects the building to the street.
